All About Atticus
The character of Atticus Finch was based upon Harper Lee's father, Mr. Amasa Lee. Mr. Lee was born in 1880. During his lifetime, he was a bookkeeper, lawyer, member of the State Legisature of Alabama, and editor of The Monroe Journal. Gregory Peck is said to have visited Mr. Lee and studied his mannerisms for his own portrayal of Atticus in the movie. Harper Lee gave Amasa's pocketwatch to Greg upon her father's death. Amasa Lee died in 1962, a cherished member of his community.
I have been trying to locate a photo of Amasa Lee for this site. If anyone knows where I can find one, email me.

Monroeville, Alabama
The town of Maycomb in "To Kill a Mockingbird" was based on Harper Lee's hometown of Monroeville, Alabama. It was here that her father Amasa, the inspiration for Atticus, raised his family and practiced law.

The courthouse where Atticus took his famous stand in the movie is an exact replica of the real Monroe County Courthouse in Monroeville where Amasa Lee worked. Today, the courthouse houses a museum.
